Insurance Information
- Short-term Disability Insurance
-
The short-term disability insurance is a benefit under the collective agreement, so it is free. The goal of the short-term disability insurance is to cover teachers when their illness prevents them from teaching.
This insurance kicks in after 5 consecutive days of illness.
For the first year of illness, the payment is 85% of your normal salary. This applies for up to one full-year, or until your contract expires (whichever comes first).
For the second year of illness, the payment is 66.66% of your normal salary. Non-perms may or may not qualify for this coverage; conditions apply.
After 2 years, the long-term disability private insurance kicks in if you have it (you must have registered before becoming ill). See section below.
- Long-term Disability Insurance
-
If you are unable to return to work after two years of illness on salary
insurance, you become eligible for long-term disability (LTD) insurance
if you are under 65 and have signed up for it. This pays you 80% of your
net pre-disability income (tax free) until you are able to return to work up to a maximum of $5000 per month. At age 65 the payments cease.
LTD insurance is compulsory for all permanent teachers at tenure. Long term disability insurance is optional for non-permanent employees. A non-permanent teacher may apply for Long Term Disability insurance WITHOUT PROOF OF INSURABILITY within the first 30 days of their first 3 contracts. - Health Insurance
-
In Quebec, drug insurance is mandatory. If you have access to group health insurance, you must join.
Teachers with more than a .2 load in a term must join the health insurance plan unless they have alternate group coverage elsewhere.
- The policy provides insurance for prescription drugs, paramedical services, hospitalization and travel insurance all tied together in one policy. If you have a spouse or family, they too must be included in your insurance unless they are already covered by comparable group insurance elsewhere.
- If you are covered by another group drug insurance plan elsewhere you can be exempted from the La Capitale plan. Ask Human Resources to exempt you from the plan. You must provide proof of alternate group coverage.
