Academic Council is an essential College body, composed of nineteen members including deans, staff, professionals, students and teachers. Ten teachers from the various faculties have the majority. We hold the majority because teachers are the frontline experts of these groups dealing with academic matters, such as courses, programs, library, space, and policy guidelines.  There are a minimum of six meetings every year, usually on Friday afternoons.  Our ten teacher representatives, when they are elected and designated by the union, agree to represent all teachers since the policies voted on at Academic Council will affect all teachers for years to come. Fair representation means all teachers would be offered an opportunity to discuss and vote on major issues of collective importance, i.e. at a General Assembly. As the union is the only body that represents all teachers, mandates have been recognized as the union’s right in directing our representatives on Academic Council.

As outlined in Bylaw-3, the purview and responsibilities of Academic Council are as follows:

1.01 The Academic Council is a permanent body whose mandate is to make recommendations to the College on any question pertaining to the maintenance, improvement or development of the College’s academic life, including programs and courses in the regular and Continuing Education divisions. The Academic Council must give its opinion to the Board of Directors on any question submitted to it by the Board in matters within its jurisdiction.

1.02 The Academic Council shall be consulted on the following specific items, among others, prior to any decision by the College:

  • proposals for institutional policy on the evaluation of learning achievement and procedures for the certification of studies;
  • proposals for institutional policy on the evaluation of programs of studies; proposals for programs of studies considered by the College, or any modification to the grid of existing programs;
  • the selection of learning activities that are within the jurisdiction of the College;
  • any draft by-law or policy relating to the rules, procedures, and criteria governing the admission and registration of students; and
  • the draft strategic plan of the College regarding matters within the jurisdiction of the Academic Council.  all academic policies and procedures which are under the Academic Dean’s purview;
  • modifications to academic structures (faculties, departments, programs);
  • modifications to academic space; · the academic calendar; memorandums of understanding with other institutions; and
  • any decision that might have a significant impact on teaching and learning.
